Mains water, for instance, typically requires 0.5 to 1.5 kWh per cubic metre to be treated and delivered.
Groundwater extraction adds another 0.4 to 0.9 kWh/m³, while surface water sources still consume around 0.2 to 0.4 kWh/m³, mainly through pumping and filtration.
These figures add up fast in energy-intensive environments like water utilities, power stations, refineries, and manufacturing sites. When high volumes of water are used for steam, cooling, or chemical processes, the associated energy - and carbon - costs rise rapidly.
Rethinking wastewater: from burden to opportunity
In many facilities, the default approach is still linear: extract water, use it, treat it, and discharge it. But this method is not only wasteful, it's expensive! Wastewater treatment, particularly when sent off-site, is one of the most energy-demanding stages in the entire cycle.
By reusing water on-site - whether for cooling loops, boiler feed, or washdown - companies can avoid energy-intensive treatment processes and reduce demand on mains or abstraction points.
Modern reverse osmosis (RO) and ultrafiltration systems can treat reused water at comparable or even lower energy costs than sourcing fresh water from mains or boreholes. For example, high-efficiency RO systems typically operate in the range of 0.5 to 1.5 kWh/m³, making them not just environmentally viable but commercially compelling.
Reclaiming value in power generation
Nowhere is the opportunity greater than in thermoelectric and CHP power plants, where water is central to steam generation and cooling. Many sites have begun switching from freshwater abstraction to municipal reclaimed water for cooling - reducing dependency on vulnerable water sources and cutting operational overheads.
Equally, recycling process water on-site helps avoid the energy drag of high-purity water production. Whether it's for demineralisation or condensate polishing, optimising treatment at source reduces the pressure on plant infrastructure and extends asset life.
